Breast augmentation is an increasingly popular cosmetic medical procedure to alter the shape and appearance of breasts. Sometimes refered to as 'Boob Jobs', breast augmentation procedures generally address the reduction or the enlargement of breasts. In breast enlargement procedures a man-made implant is put inside the existing breast tissue to increase the size of the breast. The procedure involves making incisions under the breast as well as under the armpits and then putting the implant in place. The size of the implants can vary massively depending on the size and shape the patient wishes their new breasts to have. The idea of the implant is to increase size as well as improving shape and appearance.
There are two main types of breast implants being used in breast augmentation surgeries throughout the world: saline implants and silicone implants. Silicone implants are the traditional material used in the process, but saline implants are becoming increasingly popular for a number of reasons. The implant is a soft shell that is filled with a sterile salt water solution. The shell can be pre-filled before it is inserted, or it can be inserted empty and filled during the procedure through a small valve within the implant.
The major risk involved in breast augmentation surgery comes after the surgery has been completed and concerns the implant itself. In some cases the shell of the implant has ruptured meaning that the contents of the implant has leaked out whilst within the body. The saline implant is a safer option than the silicone implant if this happens: the saline solution is a familiar enough substance for the body to absorb it safely without any risk of adverse effects.
In many cases women choose to have breast implants to improve the shape and appearance of their breasts. One problem with saline implants is that they can slowly decrease in volume over time, thus affecting the shape of the breast. The saline implant is also not as proficient at maintaining its shape and is therefore more likely to wrinkle. Also, because the saline implant is filled with a material that is less viscous than the silicone gel, some women believe that the breast itself feels and looks less natural than with silicone implants.
